IDA (2013, dir. Paweł Pawlikowski)  -- Wednesday, September 26 at 7:15pm
Peter Schmidt once wrote in a letter to Brian Eno, “In a roomful of shouting people, the one who whispers becomes interesting.” He could have easily been describing this film, a riveting meditation on faith, culpability, and choice.  A young nun and her aunt (Agata Trzebokowska and Agneta Kulesza) set out to unravel a family mystery in 1960s Poland in the aftermath of World War II. While thoroughly modern, Ida, filmed in black-and-white in now uncommon 4:3 aspect ratio, feels like a long-lost classic of Polish new wave cinema.
